WINSTON-SALEM – A bicyclist was killed early today on U.S. 311 near Union Cross Road.
Mark Daniel Zanzarella, 14, of 609 Sir Knight Court, Clemmons was killed shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday, Winston-Salem police said in a news release.
A 2008 Pontiac G-6 was driving southbound on U.S. 311 approaching Union Cross Road when it struck Zanzarella. He was either in the left southbound lane or was crossing the road from east to west, police said.
Zanzarella died at the scene. He was riding a pink 20-inch girls “Next Slumber Party” bicycle and may have been headed toward High Point, police said.
The car’s driver was Angelica Vazquez Rincon, 18, of 215 Uwharrie St., Asheboro. Neither speed nor alcohol played a part in this crash, police said.
The wreck marked the city's 14th traffic fatality this year, compared with six during the same time last year.
The Winston-Salem Police Department is looking for the driver of a red pickup truck that stopped to assist. The driver is believed to be a witness but was not involved in the crash.
