Dudley High School graduate Euna L. Wortham Smith of Washington will return to her alma mater 78 years after she graduated.
Smith, 96, was a member of Dudley’s first graduating class in 1931. She walked 10 miles a day just to get to and from school. Smith was a cheerleader, and she spent time in the school’s chorus.
On Saturday afternoon, she will give remarks about her time as a student at the awards banquet as a part of the 34th annual consolidated reunion.
“I’m anxious to see what it looks like now,” Smith said.
“I hear there’s two schools on the school grounds there now. When I was going to school, there was only the one.”
Smith will join other Dudley graduates for the three-day event that will include a variety show, banquet and picnic.
Every year for the reunion the 50-year class is honored and is responsible for planning the awards banquet and the Sunday morning memorial service. This year’s honorees will be the class of 1959.
“We’ll have registration beginning on Friday at noon and a variety show at 7 p.m.,” Yvonne Lyons Revell said.
Revell is the president of the National Dudley Alumni Association. She’s attended 12 reunions and has seen a lot of changes.
“We have brought in more members, I’ve seen a great increase in class participation and I’ve seen a great interest in Dudley High School,” Revell said.
She is hoping that interest will continue with this year’s reunion.
“The graduates are dedicated in keeping Dudley alive. We support that school,” she said.
