GRASSHOPPERS REPORT

Grasshoppers 8, Suns 1

Site: NewBridge Bank Park, Greensboro

Why the Grasshoppers won: Greensboro native Jeremy Synan — an alumnus of Northeast Guilford and N.C. State — clubbed two home runs and collected four RBIs to lead the Grasshoppers past the Hagerstown Suns in the first of a four-game series. The win lifted Greensboro to 4-9 in the second half.

Performances worth noting: Synan was the offensive star for the Hoppers, but there were others. Ben Lasater went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and Jacob Smolinski went 2-for-5 with 2 runs scored. Greensboro starter Kyle Kaminska (6-6) pitched seven quality innings, giving up one run on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Reliever Rodolfo Encarnacion pitched two shutout innings.

Also worth noting: The Hoppers collected 10 hits, including six that went for extra bases.

The big play: Trailing 1-0, Greensboro scored five runs in the third inning. Synan's two-run homer was the key hit.

Up next: Hagerstown at Greensboro, 7:05 p.m. today (WPET-950)
