Man steals cats from shelter to save their lives

REIDSVILLE — The cats scheduled to be euthanized Tuesday morning at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter couldn’t buy any more time.

So, Edward McIrvin decided to buy it for them.

Reidsville police issued warrants against McIrvin for crimes he freely admits committing: breaking into the shelter and stealing 37 cats.

And René Jackson, the former shelter director, said she was fired this week after being accused of aiding McIrvin in the theft.

McIrvin said he made the decision about 10 p.m. Monday in a moment of desperation, fearing all the cats would be killed Tuesday, one of the shelter’s two euthanasia days.

“I just simply could not live with that,” McIrvin said in a phone interview late Thursday.

The cats were reported stolen Tuesday morning by staff at Reidsville Veterinary Hospital, which contracts with the county for shelter space.

McIrvin faces charges of felony breaking and entering and felony larceny, said police Lt. Wendell Neville. He plans to turn himself in.

As for the cats, they’ve been returned in good condition.

“Mr. McIrvin was trying to provide care for these animals and have them adopted,” Neville said.

“He was providing well for them.”

McIrvin, 43, of Greensboro said he is an indoor environmentalist who works for his father’s company, Skylon Innovations. He has volunteered at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter since spring, doing odd jobs such as replacing water dishes and building wooden shelves inside the cages.

“There were a number of small projects that I was doing to improve the environment,” he said. “I was focusing my energy, my attention on creating a much more harmonious space at the shelter.”

But McIrvin’s role at the shelter changed late Monday afternoon. He remembers it being hectic, with at least 70 animals scheduled to be euthanized the next day. Jackson was making calls to try to quickly move some of the animals out the door.

Jackson said Thursday she saved about 25 through fostering and rescue groups. But most were dogs.

“No one came for the cats,” said McIrvin, who has a particular affection for felines.

McIrvin called his father and stepmother, who are active in PETA, and others he knew to find the cats homes. “I was not successful,” he said. “That is when I decided I must rescue the cats.”

He spent $700 in four hours at Walmart buying crates, litter boxes and towels. About 5 a.m. Tuesday, McIrvin said, he drove to the shelter in a service truck and entered through an unlocked back door. He lifted each cat from its cage.

He drove the cats to an old office above a house in Greensboro that his family owns. It was clean and vacant, an ideal spot for them. “It was a place where they could find their own space,” McIrvin said.

He said he left behind those that were feral and ill. “That was a painful, painful moment of decision.”

McIrvin planned to get the cats veterinary care and foster them. But their freedom was short-lived.

About 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, McIrvin received a call from a Reidsville Veterinary Hospital staff person. He was asked if he knew where the cats were and was told that the police were involved. After investigators interviewed him, McIrvin said, he was allowed to return the cats with a police escort.

The Rockingham County Animal Shelter has been plagued with problems for years. The small building on Reidsville Veterinary Hospital’s West Harrison Street property has struggled with crowding and euthanasia rates that reached 98 percent.

The county is in the midst of a fundraising campaign to build a new $1.8 million shelter in Wentworth.

Even with criminal charges hanging over his head, McIrvin still hasn’t given up on those cats.

He delivered $5,800 to Steven Swanner, a veterinarian with the Reidsville Veterinary Hospital, on Thursday night. The money will be used to pay for adoption and spay and neuter fees for the 37 cats — four of whom are pregnant — for those who adopt them.

McIrvin said he has one week to get them adopted, and then the clock starts ticking once again.

“The No. 1 goal that I had hoped to achieve was that they would be spared,” he said. “I have basically spent a great deal of money to buy me a little bit of room to breathe.”

Anyone interested in adopting the cats should call the Reidsville Veterinary Hospital at 349-3194.

I agree with johug2 that this is civil disobedience. Yes, it may be classified as a felony, countryboy, but the heart of civil disobedience is breaking a law without hurting anyone in order to remedy what one sees as injustice. He freely admitted the crime he committed and is willing to pay the price for it. If this isn't civil disobedience, what is? By the way, I'm not an animal rights advocate and I wouldn't dream of doing what he did for the reason he did it.

Point well taken...we all have different definitions of civil disobedience...which is a PC way of saying "committing a crime that taxpayers will have to fund". If the judge imposes a fine that covers all expenses it would be easier to accept from a practical point. I disagree with four way stop signs...they are needless and waste precious fossil fuels...but I am not going to run one. The end does not justify the means under our constitution. And our definition of "hurting" someone may be different. How much time has been wasted because of this act? Time away from families, etc.

Sometimes love and attachment to something will cloud our judgment. Can you imagine taking care of something for weeks and knowing it is going to die tomorrow simply for lack of a home. Country Boy, there is much more to this story, some of us have been in Rescue for 15-20 years, you have no idea what is behind this. You think this man is the only one breaking the law? Not keeping your businesses separate is breaking the law. I pray this is not swept under the rug and RVH is investigated from the IRS, to the Dept of Ag. Something needs to be done about these Vets at this hospital making money off of these innocent animals.

Country Boy
To say "the ends does not justify the means" is an easy out if you'd like to live in a world where what is right and wrong is always a black and white issue. When people in Germany were hiding Jews in the basement they were breaking the law. I sincerely hope you can see where that type of simplistic reasoning doesn't always hold water.

Country Boy..If you actually think that any money would be used to improve that hellhole they call a shelter, you are sadly mistaken. The only way to improve the conditions is to SHUT IT DOWN!!!!

Well if the judge that gets assigned this case has two brain cells to rub together he will dismiss the charges and order an investigation of this shelter for the myriad of reasons posted so something GOOD will come of what this person tried to do that will reach beyond the animals immediately involved. I think we need to keep an eye on how this whole situation goes down when it is in front of a judge since that is whose hands it is in now and hope they expect that the humanity with which they handle the case will affect their career-as it well should. I will be following this case for sure and I doubt I will be the only one.

Laws are man made. Yes, it is a felony but should be reduced based on intent. This was civil disobedience based on humane considerations. There is a higher power and ethics involved in life.

If all of you are so upset over the treatment of the cats, and what has happened why don't you go and adopt one of them instead of wasting your time making these comments? While you are typing your comments that will not change anything you are missing your chance to go save a life of a cat. There are currently 44 comments on this topic - do you realize that if each of you go and adopt one cat a piece each of these cats would be adopted and the problem would be solved?

Does Rockingham County have an FCAP rescue organization? If so, they should have been contacted.

Falcon79

as far as I know there is no local FCAP program- nearest would be Burlington or GSO. I don't think all the cats stolen were feral- possibly some. I would love to see one set up in RC due to the fact that about 60-75% in the shelter are usually ferals.

FCAP is a non-profit group, we are not subsidized by any gov't and rely on private donations. Unfortunately we are the only Feral Cat Group in Guilford County, another FFF is in Forsyth. Edward didn't know about us until Thursday......he does now.

Why wouldn't animal control let this caring person take the cats home to try and give them a chance at life? The people that run this animal control facility (it is no shelter - it is a place to dispose of animals) have no compassion for these animals. They have proven that by their policies toward rescues and their high adoption fees. They are highly paid for performing the dirty job that unfortunately they need to perform because so many residents are irresponsible pet owners.

Rockingham County is in dream-land if they think they can run a vital county service without a major investment. They had no problem handing over well in excess of 130K per year to the current facility for so many years. I do not understand why they think they can run a better facility with donations. It's ridiculous.

I would like to shake Mr. Edward McIrvin's hand. Your are truley someone who cares for cats. They are all so wonderful and to be senetenced to death it really such a shame.

Hey Dr Swanner, what's going to happen to the $5800.00 paid into the RVH if no one comes for the cats by Tuesday? Are you going to kill them and keep the cash? If he paid MeIrvan paid the adoption fees why can't he have the cats?

i have heard that the fee was negotiated for 1 week & then they will negotiate another week of boarding. The cats supposedly won't be put down. We just have to wait & see.

NASTY RUMOR ALERT: This may be true, may not be true -- but I heard this morning from someone who would have a reasonable amount of knowledge...that the reason the Reidsville Veterinary Hospital and its esteemed president doesn't really make a huge effort to save the shelters animals...is because the ones that are unclaimed are used for research. Yes, I heard that this morning in a discussion about this very story. The source who told me is...let's just say...somewhat associated with county government. Anyway, it is rumored that Dr. K...who runs R.V.H. and the shelter for now...has an agreement that an organization will take the animals, for a fee, and they are used for medical research. True or not, I can't say, but knowing him, I would bet there is some shread of truth to it. He is a great doctor..but his love for the almighty dollar has overshadowed his will to help people and their pets...so he's lost his focus. All around, this is a tragic story.

Euthanized cats are sold for $$ & the money is then split between the medical fund (supposedly) & the county (for the new shelter)

I have stopped taking my pets, 2 dogs and 6 cats, to RVH. Dr. K and the others there should pay for the new shelter out of their own pockets.

The sad thing is that the Reidsville Vet Hospital for the most part evolved into a strictly for profit business. the owner who we will name K is in business to make money. Distraught pet owners are told by the staff that Spot or Fluffy will not live another day without batteries of tests (bloodwork, etc) and that overnight stays for observation are necessary to administer highly overpriced medications (check the costs on the internet) or various other reasons. At times this may be necessary but in rare occasions. Questions need to be asked and answers should be demanded. Find out how much RVH collects from the county for every euthanized animal and then ask what becomes of the remains...sold for research? Rockingham County needs an alternative animal protection shelter. There are plans in the works. Find out the details and see how you can help. We can all do better than this.

This man needs to be lifted high and praised for what he has done!!! He was doing a favor for these cats as well as the hospital. I mean, all they do it complain of low funds. And he gets arrested for giving the cats better care then they would have gotten there... and kept them from killing them! He saved them money and showed this world there are decent people out there.....fighting for what they believe in!!! I think I love you Mr. McIrvin!!!!!! 3 cheers to you!!! The system sure is wrong.
