Man steals cats from shelter to save their lives

Friday, July 10, 2009
(Updated 2:55 pm)

REIDSVILLE — The cats scheduled to be euthanized Tuesday morning at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter couldn’t buy any more time.

So, Edward McIrvin decided to buy it for them.

Reidsville police issued warrants against McIrvin for crimes he freely admits committing: breaking into the shelter and stealing 37 cats.

And René Jackson, the former shelter director, said she was fired this week after being accused of aiding McIrvin in the theft.

McIrvin said he made the decision about 10 p.m. Monday in a moment of desperation, fearing all the cats would be killed Tuesday, one of the shelter’s two euthanasia days.

“I just simply could not live with that,” McIrvin said in a phone interview late Thursday.

The cats were reported stolen Tuesday morning by staff at Reidsville Veterinary Hospital, which contracts with the county for shelter space.

McIrvin faces charges of felony breaking and entering and felony larceny, said police Lt. Wendell Neville. He plans to turn himself in.

As for the cats, they’ve been returned in good condition.

“Mr. McIrvin was trying to provide care for these animals and have them adopted,” Neville said.

“He was providing well for them.”

McIrvin, 43, of Greensboro said he is an indoor environmentalist who works for his father’s company, Skylon Innovations. He has volunteered at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter since spring, doing odd jobs such as replacing water dishes and building wooden shelves inside the cages.

“There were a number of small projects that I was doing to improve the environment,” he said. “I was focusing my energy, my attention on creating a much more harmonious space at the shelter.”

But McIrvin’s role at the shelter changed late Monday afternoon. He remembers it being hectic, with at least 70 animals scheduled to be euthanized the next day. Jackson was making calls to try to quickly move some of the animals out the door.

Jackson said Thursday she saved about 25 through fostering and rescue groups. But most were dogs.

“No one came for the cats,” said McIrvin, who has a particular affection for felines.

McIrvin called his father and stepmother, who are active in PETA, and others he knew to find the cats homes. “I was not successful,” he said. “That is when I decided I must rescue the cats.”

He spent $700 in four hours at Walmart buying crates, litter boxes and towels. About 5 a.m. Tuesday, McIrvin said, he drove to the shelter in a service truck and entered through an unlocked back door. He lifted each cat from its cage.

He drove the cats to an old office above a house in Greensboro that his family owns. It was clean and vacant, an ideal spot for them. “It was a place where they could find their own space,” McIrvin said.

He said he left behind those that were feral and ill. “That was a painful, painful moment of decision.”

McIrvin planned to get the cats veterinary care and foster them. But their freedom was short-lived.

About 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, McIrvin received a call from a Reidsville Veterinary Hospital staff person. He was asked if he knew where the cats were and was told that the police were involved. After investigators interviewed him, McIrvin said, he was allowed to return the cats with a police escort.

The Rockingham County Animal Shelter has been plagued with problems for years. The small building on Reidsville Veterinary Hospital’s West Harrison Street property has struggled with crowding and euthanasia rates that reached 98 percent.

The county is in the midst of a fundraising campaign to build a new $1.8 million shelter in Wentworth.

Even with criminal charges hanging over his head, McIrvin still hasn’t given up on those cats.

He delivered $5,800 to Steven Swanner, a veterinarian with the Reidsville Veterinary Hospital, on Thursday night. The money will be used to pay for adoption and spay and neuter fees for the 37 cats — four of whom are pregnant — for those who adopt them.

McIrvin said he has one week to get them adopted, and then the clock starts ticking once again.

“The No. 1 goal that I had hoped to achieve was that they would be spared,” he said. “I have basically spent a great deal of money to buy me a little bit of room to breathe.”

Anyone interested in adopting the cats should call the Reidsville Veterinary Hospital at 349-3194.

Wow...Reidsville Veterinary Hospital seems to be turning into "General Hospital". I have nothing but good things to say about the doctors there, they're make an awesome team who perform miracles everyday. On the other hand...what a drama factory that place is turning out to be. Allegedly firing the director of the animal shelter because they THINK she MIGHT have had something to do with rescuing cats??? Dr. Kinnarney has really knocked a few screws loose! He needs to stop thinking about the money and remember the real reason he's there...to care for our pets.

Wow - I can't believe an animal shelter would report the theft of 37 cats. Do you really want to euthanize them that badly? Then you fire the director - unbelievable.

Dr, K has not only lost sight of caring about animals he has lost sight about running a business. He only sees $$ signs anymore. He is taking the county's money & the county doesn't seem to care what he does with it. I as a taxpayer would love to see a breakdown of the money actually spent at the shelter. but Dr. K states he cannot seperate his businesses??!! I, also understand having to euthanise, but if you have room & you have several animals that are adoptable as most are- then let them stay around & have a chance at life. The poor dogs & cats can't helped they were dumped off by their stupid owners. The owners ought to contact local groups for assistance - there is help out there. I just pray I am around long enough for the county to get this shelter built. Please don't let this fall thru the cracks!!

I am not sure what happened to my original comment, but it was needed to be said so I shall post it again. I am not advocating crime of any kind, however, dare to step foot and really see the needless sufferings of animals in any given shelter anywhere. If you have a pet and haven't already, spay or neuter. If you are considering a pet, consider an older animal, much less to deal with. If you are considering a pet, consider a cat. I have four wonderful ones, all as totally loyal to me as any dog. Finally, volunteer at your local shelter. It's a great parent/child activity. I have volunteered for two years and have obtained such joy to know I have helped animals find forever homes. You can't save them all unfortunately, but euthanasia is a by product of man. Be a part of the solution, not the problem.

The actions of McIrvin are representative of the militant, "animal rights" group that he and his family belong to, as PETA does more to hurt their cause with their bully, in-your-face, Marxist-style tactics. And who is to say that these cats won't be in worse condition once out of the animal shelter, free to breed and bring more cats into the world? Stealing these cats just for the sake of prolonging their lives does not address the problem of unwanted pets and overcrowding. Spaying and neutering are all part of being a RESPONSIBLE pet-owner. I followed this advice when I became a proud dog owner in 1997, one of the first tasks I performed when I got my black lab mix from this same animal shelter.

That's ridiculous. One doesn't have to be part of a "militant animal rights group" to be totally shaken by what happens to animals in a shelter. I believe any compassionate human being might have the urge to "steal" animals from an animal shelter, but don't for a variety of reasons...including the chance of being arrested. I bet more people would if they thought they would not get in trouble for doing it.

The part about the spay/neuter issue is a point well made. The spaying and neutering of most pets should be mandatory, and people who breed pets should need a license to do so. The real problem here is the overpopulation of animals in our community. Let's place the blame where it is due.

It is assured that you both (northoftheboro; pwisn591) have not went to adopt a cat or dog at the shelter. They do spray and neuter before they are adopted out to a new family. I am sure that Mclrvin had plans to do this as well. In the story it states he would seak care for all of them threw a vet. Although I don't agree with him entering into the place without anyone knowing. I am proud of him for standing up for those animals ! I really don't think he is an "ANIMAL RIGHTS PERSON" I just think he had a big heart and was tired of seeing all the animals at that sheltor being killed. I think that the Belmont vet is just out for the money! They cost the most in the county to get your animal fixed! And, for Belmont vet to say that have the records mixed together with both businesses is poor business! Or, it was Belmont vet just trying to avoid a situation. I think it's time for a nice audit!!! from the county!!! Maybe we could of afforded the sheltor a long time ago if it hadn't been for BELMONT VET!

Contrary to popular belief, not all animal shelters spay and or neuter before they adopt animals out. It is sometimes left up to the potential adoptive parent to see that this gets done. Be a responsible pet owner and spay or neuter your animal. There are many places you can go and get this done at low costs. I do believe that there is a conflict of interest on the part of Reidsville Vet. in that they own the land that the shelter animals are housed on and are paid by the county for every animal that they euthanize. Since these cats were slotted to euthanize anyway, what real value did they have to Reidsville Vet other than the fact that they would have lost the euthanisia fee they would have been paid by the county. What it this really saying about the people running this facility? You be the judge, the writing is clearly on the wall. It is time for the county to either appoint a Humane Society to go in an run this shelter, or for the county to take over running it to alleviate this conflict of interest. The interest is certainly not in the animals welfare.

Any animal shelter worthy of its name DEMANDS a pet to spayed or neutered before they leave the shelter...Rockingham Co. (in which I live) is just behind the times on this fact.....

What has Belmont vet got to do with it??? I think you are referring to Reidsville Vet.

Isn't it nice to know so much...If everyone was listening to the spay and neuter news regarding animals than vigilanty tactics wouldn't be necessary, would they? Why is it THESE particular animals fault or fate to suffer confinement and instant death because the rest of us don't care, and can't or won't afford to deal with the issue. Isn't it OUR job as the higher (so-called) intelligent authority on Earth to take care of them? ...Kudos to you that you got your dog spayed...what else are you doing to help?

Nothing was stolen. "The cats were in good condition". They are going to kill them anyway. Why not let the Mr.
McIrvin help them? He was going to pay for their neutering, before releasing them to new owners. The vet just wanted the money.

knowit

July 10, 2009 - 9:47 am EDT

He certainly had planned to have them vetted, vaccinated and spay or neutered. I have first hand knowledge that appointments had been made for these sevices, although it wasn't through Reidsville Vet, maybe that's the problem. Now Reidsville is double dipping.

Mr. McIrvin has PAID all adoption fees on these cats & they are readly to be adopted. Of course RVH gets the money, but the cats are more likely to get adopted. The public is encouraged to go by & look at the cats & fill out an adoption form. They will be spayed/neutered before leaving along w/ vaccines, microchip & deworm. They will also have 30days of pet Ins.

Or course RVH will get the money, thats what they are all about; could care less about any animal that walks in the door.

A true hero and a testament to decency and the brave.

As to the bold statement that this was some act of a militant, you are off your rocker. Saving a life is commendable -

Agree wholeheartedly much of your second paragraph.

Now if we could just convince people to care about needy fellow human beings as much as some folks seem to care about needy animals.

This man did a brave act to try and save the cats that were going to be killed anyway. Why was the vet so desparate to get the cats back??? Are they getting $$ from the state to kill the animals.

What goes on at that place really needs to be exposed!!!! Just ask people about the cruelty that goes on there..too many sick cats stuffed into one cage...feral cats stuffed into cages, then they are all killed. Remember last Summer when all those animals died because it got too hot...that sounds to me like all they care for is $$$, certianly, not the animals!!

The shelter manager worked her heart out to try and save the animals and what did they do? They decided to kill all the cats, these are animals that could have been adopted!!! Then they fired her because they "suspected" that she helped the cat napper....if she did help him, then God Bless her for her bravery.

Also, they need to be asked, how many dogs did they kill yesterday?? I heard that they killed all but two.

Then perhaps you should work towards better sex education for our children because parents often don't bother. And perhaps you can sponsor one of the parents who has a child they nearly aborted or even adopt a child that was "rescued" from such actions. This isn't the place.

Let me assure you I will apologize for nothing I've said. Should you be someone akin to Mother Theresa you wouldn't be talking about something eugenically motivated or "hitleresque." To say something like that is ridiculous. You can't possibly think sex education in this country is what it should be. (Private/Public/Home/Church/etc.) If you have adopted/fostered, etc. good for you. That's a great thing. However, most everyone I've known that makes comments such as yours does nothing other than complain about what other people are doing and doing nothing at all to help that situation.
