RALEIGH (AP) — A North Carolina community battered by manufacturing layoffs holds a meeting that could signal it is the future home of Apple Inc.'s East Coast data center.
Catawba County and the town of Maiden meet on Monday to consider economic development. Local officials wouldn't say whether they'll approve local incentives to lure Apple to the county with a 15 percent unemployment rate.
The state changed its tax calculations to land Apple's $1 billion data center.
Catawba County is developing a 180-acre business park with backup electricity, water and fiber-optic cable supplies. Data centers like the one Apple last month pledged to build in North Carolina are heavy users of all three utilities.
Spokesmen for the technology giant declined to comment.
