Hoppers have to make do with split

Why the Grasshoppers won the first game: Three pitchers combined on a five-hitter, and center fielder Kevin Mattison (UNC-Asheville) drove in two runs before the game was suspended Wednesday because of rain.
Performances worth noting: Greensboro right fielder Isaac Galloway went 3-for-4 and scored two runs. First baseman Ben Lasater, designated hitter Jeremy Synan (Northeast Guilford and N.C. State) and second baseman Daniel Pertusati added two hits each. Closer Pete Andrelczyk struck out four in two perfect innings to pick up his 13th save of the season.
Why the Grasshoppers lost the second game: Sloppy play, plain and simple. Four of Lakewood's five runs were unearned, thanks to errors by Mattison, playing right field, Pertusati and reliever Jared Yecker. Starter Brad Hand threw two wild pitches and Yecker had one. When the Hoppers weren't bobbling or throwing away the ball, they held Lakewood to five hits in six innings.
Performances worth noting: Mattison did provide some offense, going 2-for-3 and stealing his 28th and 29th bases of the season for Greensboro. Synan picked up his 43rd RBI and is batting .262 for the season. For Lakewood, center fielder Anthony Gose went 2-for-2 with an RBI, but he was picked off once and caught stealing once. BlueClaws starter Heitor Correa (6-2, 2.82 ERA) held the Hoppers to four hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Ryan Bergh finished to record his 11th save of the season.
Also worth noting: After the completion of Wednesday's suspended game, the nightcap was shortened to seven innings.
