Time for new president at Greensboro College

Saturday, July 4, 2009
(Updated 3:00 am)

Greensboro College changed my life and made me the person I am today. In addition to my degree, I graduated in 2005 with a whole new set of life skills, including leadership abilities, a proficiency for critical thinking, and a keener sense of the world around me.

The college is now in a severe financial crisis, and many of my classmates and I are questioning how things got so far off track, and if the school will be able to survive. Since graduating, I have worked as a fundraiser for another college in Greensboro and learned much about how a school operates. A key role of any college president is to raise funds.

I firmly believe that Greensboro College is long overdue for a new president, and that if the board of trustees doesn’t step up and make a change, the school will not endure. To the board: You have a responsibility to faculty, staff, students and alumni to appoint a leader under whom the school can thrive. Please step up and do so before it is too late. We are counting on you.

Ellie Puckett
Greensboro

I'm guessing Ellie got a crick in her elbow from patting herself on the back -

Does Greensboro College have any graduates who have gone on to become wealthy, or is the college solely dependent upon private donors or members of the Methodist Church? I think therein lies the crux of the problem. After all those years, Greensboro College is no powerhouse in any respects. Not a condemnation, just a statement of reality.

"Greensboro College changed my life and made me the person I am today."

Since graduating, I have worked as a fundraiser for ANOTHER [emphasis added] college in Greensboro . . . ."

Is that a "disconnect" I see between the first sentence and the second sentence quoted?

Greensboro College does not need fund raising assistance from Miss Pucket. We're doing just fine, and the results will be there for all to see really soon.

The President of Greensboro College doesn't need help from anybody. He is the smartest, best dressed, and best paid college president in the nation. Other college presidents ask him for advice. When Guilford College raised a record 10 million dollars this year, they could not have done it without Craven Williams help.
