Several students involved in Rockingham County 4-H won awards during the North Central 4-H District Activity Day on June 19 in Caswell County.
Lorrie Norwood won the gold in the Electric category, 11-13 age group. Emily Holmes brought home the silver in Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, 9-10 age group. Sarah Holmes captured the bronze prize in Health and Fitness, 11-13 age group.
Ryan Marlow won the bronze award in Open Class (11-13); Leah VanEerden the gold in Public Speaking (14-18), and Mikala Marlow the silver in Science and Technology (11-13). Emily Holmes won the bronze award in the career poster contest (9-10).
Lorrie Norwood, Leah VanEerden and Mikala Marlow will advance to the state competition in Raleigh this month.

Joe Baez has been appointed the new principal of New Vision School of Science, Math and Technology in Madison.
Baez earned a master’s degree in administration from UNCG and has worked as an assistant principal at Rockingham County Middle School for seven years. He is a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. Before his job at Rockingham Middle, he taught Marine JROTC at Reidsville High School.

Ashley Lauren Berger and Meredith Lynn Greeson, both of Eden, were named to the spring semester Dean’s List at Wake Forest University. Kevin Lee Ferris of Reidsville was also named to the list.

U.S. Army Reserve Pvt. Brian Galloway and Reserve Sgt. Bontreva L. Millner-Hill graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.
The soldiers were trained in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, and armed and unarmed combat, among other skills.
Galloway, a 2008 graduate of McMichael High School, is the son of Anthony Galloway of Walnut Cove and Marguerite Hales of Madison.
Millner-Hill is the daughter of Curtis Millner and the granddaughter of Alice Clark, both of Reidsville. She is a 1989 graduate of Rockingham County High School and a 1995 graduate of N.C. Central University.
U.S. Air Force Airman Jeremy A. Massey has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
During an eight-week course, Massey was trained in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare.
Massey is the son of Ernest Massey of Grantville, Pa., and the grandson of Mildred Massey of Reidsville.
