A patrol car driven by Major J.V. Thomas of the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department ran off the road and struck a telephone pole about 2:20 a.m. today, trapping the officer inside and totaling the vehicle.
Emergency workers removed Thomas from the vehicle, according to Dean Venable with the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department. Thomas, who was treated at Moses Cone Hospital and released, was on his way home from work, Venable said.
The state Highway Patrol is investigating the accident at Washington and Hampton streets.
