MADISON — A 30-year-old Madison man began shooting indiscriminately, often in the direction of deputies, during a standoff Wednesday night, the sheriff's office said.
About 11 p.m., Gerry Bullins, 30, of 1181 Gold Hill Road, became involved in a domestic argument with other family members, according to the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office.
He became upset and fired a .22-caliber rifle inside the house, the sheriff's office said in a statement.
Relatives left to call for help.
When deputies arrived, Bullins began shooting, according to the sheriff's office. An estimated 30 shots were fired.
The sheriff's office's special response team arrived and was able to take Bullins into custody about 90 minutes later.
He was taken to the hospital for an evaluation with criminal charges pending.
"The residence at 1181 Gold Hill Road continues to be under a voluntary quarantine with H1N1 concerns," according to the sheriff's office statement, which did not elaborate.
