GREENSBORO – The Greensboro-Guilford County Crime Stoppers program has been nominated for the FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award.

The award honors individuals and organizations for their efforts in combating crime, terrorism, drugs and violence in America and was created in 1990.

The award is given annually by FBI Director Robert Mueller.

The winner will be announced in August and the award will be presented in Washington D.C. in March 2010.

Since its inception in January 1981, the Crime Stoppers program has helped clear more than 6,900 cases and has led to more than 9,400 arrests.

It has led to the recovery of more than $16 million drugs and property since 1981.

“Our Crime Stoppers’ program is the best in the state and this supports what we know to be the truth,” said Capt. Janice Rogers, head of the police department’s criminal investigations division.

“Our program continues to rise above the others and sets the benchmark for all Crime Stoppers programs.”

The program, which is housed at the Greensboro police department’s headquarters at 300 W. Washington Street, takes tips for both Greensboro police and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.

The program is administered by Sandy Tew and Julia Styers.

Crime Stoppers callers remain anonymous and are eligible for cash rewards for information that leads to an arrest and conviction of wanted individuals.

Tips can be submitted by calling 373-1000.
