Don’t let Y fail

Friday, July 3, 2009
(Updated 3:00 am)

Citizens of Greensboro, wake up to what’s happening to your YWCA! How can we justify letting the Y sell its building and have to relocate and curtail its many services?

Do you even realize how beneficial these services are to the community? Who is going to take care of the children of those parents who work — many of them in services that help keep our city running?

Surely there is some corporation/business whose budget could include helping the Y.

Yes, times are hard now, but not investing in our children should not be an option!

Thanks for your letter Ms Moore. "Investing" in the "YM/W/C/H/As" has brought uncountable benefits to American society over the past century. Alas, a significant portion of our citizens, especially our business 'leaders,' and some of the correspondents on this page, don't believe in civil society anymore. Anything that cannot be commercialized, like the Y, is frightening to them and their henchmen. And please, don't use the words "society," "service" and "community" around them unless you want to hear either the peals of their ugly laughter, or goblin-like screeches of 'Socialism!'

catfish, I agree in large measure with the thrust of your comments; however, I am aware that over the years many important "business leaders" have served on Y Boards. And other "business leaders" (Bryan and Weaver, to mention only two) have contributed significant financial support of the Y's.

Mrs. Moore, I suggest you consider becoming a member of the YM/YWCA, the Bryan Y, located on West Market Street in Greensboro. The Y at that location permits men and women to serve on its Board of Directors with equal voting privileges. And I don't believe men (associate members) of the YW have a voting privilege (unless the policy has changed in recent years). This small factor may be a great reason for both membership/financial problems of YW. Just a thought.
