Bobb deserves praise for his tenure at UNCG

Hats off to Ed Hardin regarding his story about UNCG Athletics Director Nelson Bobb. UNCG did “lose a good one.” I had the opportunity to work with him on the Advisory Council for Inter-Collegiate Athletics (ACIA) for three years, and being a UNCG alumnus, spoke with him at various UNCG sporting events.

I doubt many ADs throughout the country care for their athletics departments (coaches, administrative staff and student-athletes) and university the way he did and still does. He told me he was “a Spartan, and proud of it.”

UNCG was fortunate and lucky to have him develop and lead the athletics program for 26 years. Without him, it wouldn’t be where it is and wouldn’t have the respect of other programs throughout the country.

Being a part of ACIA, I learned  athletes at UNCG are truly “student-athletes” and are held to a much higher standard than other  students and other universities as well, thanks to Bobb.

When I heard about the new chancellor, I was excited that we finally had someone enthusiastic about sports and who truly believed  building a strong program would help build a better university.

I hope this chancellor knows what she’s doing because now it’s all on her. Thanks, Nelson, for a great 26 years.

The UNC System should be deeply ashamed they are spending a single dime on sports teams, much less 200 million a year. The schools' mission is education and research, not sports.

A typical response from someone that never played sports. Get back to your knitting, grandma!!

Greg,

I'm not knocking Nelson Bobb but one major component in how Athletic Directors are judged is whether their teams win or lose.

UNCG's basketball teams (women and men) have performed poorly due to bad recruitment and coaching that just hasn't kept up with the times.

His insistence that the women's and men's coaches be paid equally hurts any real chance of competing in the lucrative men's basketball arena.

UNCG's chancellor is taking their sports program seriously and this is just one step in the right direction.

If you want to talk about bad sports decisions, let's talk about replacing Herb Sendek with Sidney Lowe.
