GREENSBORO — Joseph Widemon Jr. eluded police after four bank robberies this June — until he slowed for what appeared to be a routine traffic stop Wednesday and was apprehended by U.S. Marshals near his Three Meadows Road home.
What made it worse for him: It was his 55th birthday.
Widemon, who is being held in the Guilford County Jail on a $500,000 bond, has been charged with robbing the Wachovia at 1800 Battleground Ave. on June 1; the First Citizens Bank, 3600 N. Elm St., on June 5; the State Employees Credit Union, 1030 W. Market St., on June 15; and the Southern Community Bank and Trust, 1505 Highwoods Blvd., on June 29.
In each robbery, the thief handed a note to a teller demanding money, police said. No injuries were reported.
But also each time, witnesses were able to describe a green “box” Jeep used in the getaway.
“His vehicle has been identified down to the tags,” said Greensboro Capt. Janice Rogers, head of criminal investigations.
Widemon, who served time in prison in the 1970s for bank robbery and also uses a Reidsville address, makes his first appearance in Superior Court on these charges on Thursday.
