Easley controversy, economy trim gifts to N.C. State
RALEIGH (AP) — A North Carolina State University official says new donations are down percent from last year, but can't say if it is because of the Mary Easley job controversy or the slumping economy.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday that new giving commitments are down 22 percent from a year ago. In the fiscal year that ended Tuesday, however, the university received donations of about $74 million - roughly the same as last year.
N.C. State advancement official Nevin Kessler says the decline is more due to the economy than the Easley job issue.
One regular donor wrote the school that he didn't need to give money if the university could afford an $80,000 salary raise for the former governor's wife.
Mary Easley was fired after questions were raised about her hiring and job duties.
