DANVILLE, Va. — A man on a ride-along with a police officer was charged with animal cruelty for allegedly killing an opossum.
On June 20, Evan Bryce Schuler, 22, was riding with an officer in a Danville police car as part of the police department’s ride-along program. After the officer refueled at the Monument Street facility, Schuler jumped from the front passenger seat of the police vehicle and ran toward an opossum that was running along the perimeter fence, police said in a news release. Schuler kicked the opossum several times, killing it.
Schuler was immediately confronted by two officers, police said. He said that he lives on a farm, that opossums routinely kill his chickens and that his behavior was “instinctive.”
Police charged Schulter on Monday with cruelty to animals. He was released on a summons to appear in court.
