N.C. A&T sprinter Loreal Smith advanced to the finals in the women's 100-meter hurdles at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., on Sunday.
Smith finished sixth in the finals with a time of 12.90. The top four finishers qualified for the IAAF World Championships in Germany in August. Earlier Smith ran a 12.97 in the prelims, breaking the school record she set in May at 13.14.
Aggies sprinter Calesio Newman, jumper David McFadgen and two-time All-American Alexandria Spruiel also competed as did former Aggie Tarrish Alexander.
men's GOLF
UNCG: Franklin native Colin Chapman will transfer to UNCG from Oglethorpe University. Chapman was part of Oglethorpe's Division III national championship this past season. He earned second-team All-American honors.
U.S. SENIOR OPEN QUALIFIER: Two Greensboro golfers -- Glenn Sharpe and Glenn Sexton -- finished in a tie for first at U.S. Senior Open Championship sectional qualifier at The Governors Club in Chapel Hill.
BASEBALL
WAKE FOREST: Dennis Healy will join Wake Forest's coaching staff as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. Healy recently finished his fourth season as head coach at Marist.
ASHEBORO 6, HITOMS 5: Lance Honeycutt pitched the Asheboro Copperheads (10-18) past the HiToms in Coastal Plain League baseball at Finch Field in Thomasville. Stewart Ijames hit two home runs for the HiToms (14-13).
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
GUILFORD: Five more athletes announced plans to play football at Guilford College: receiver/kick returner Blake Forlines (Richmond, Va.), center James Frazier (East Davidson), tight end Joseph McCabe (SouthLake Christian Academy), lineman Adam Pigg (Gastonia Ashbrook) and lineman Edrian Pumar (Potomac, Md.).
