Summerfield puts off decision to sell land to fire department

The Summerfield Town Council had a special meeting June 23 to finish business it was unable to wrap up in its June 9 meeting.

Council members voted 4-1 to table the decision of whether or not to sell the town’s property on Summerfield Road to the fire department until January.

Councilman John Wray said the town should hold onto the property because it would be an ideal site for a new town hall. “We’ve outgrown that space, and we’re continuing to grow,” he said.

Councilwomen Alicia Flowers and Becky Strickland disagree. They said because that property is located next to the fire station, it would be disruptive to town business.

Initially, Mayor Mark Brown suggested the council table the discussion for 18 months.

Mayor Pro Tem Dena Barnes suggested the council revisit it when budget talks begin for the 2010-11 fiscal year in January.

The council also voted 3-2 in favor of giving Town Manager Michael Brandt a 2 percent increase in salary.
