'Antiques Roadshow' sets appraisal record in Raleigh

RALEIGH (AP) — The popular PBS series "Antiques Roadshow" set an appraisal record in Raleigh when a collection of Chinese jade was valued at possibly more than $1 million.

Show publicist Erika Denn said the four pieces of jade from the period of 1736 to 1795 were valued at $710,000 to $1.07 million. That breaks the previous record of $500,000 set last year in Palm Springs, Calif., for a painting by abstract expressionist Clyfford Still.

An unidentified woman from eastern North Carolina owns the jade, which she took to the show early Saturday morning.

The show also drew 34,000 requests for tickets, besting the previous record of 29,000 tickets for a show in San Jose, Calif., that will be held later this summer. Denn said 6,400 tickets were distributed in Raleigh.

I went to this event and had an absolutely great time - it was extremely well organized and the Raleigh Convention Center is a first class facility. Afterwards my significant other & I went to The Roasters Grill which is on West Street in almost downtown Raleigh, it only seats 14 people and has unforgettable hot dogs - the properitor absolutely allows no ketchup in his small rustic establishment and has posted NO KETCHUP signs. We waited in line about 10 or 15 minutes for a seat - absolutely great grilled hot dogs -

If I had known you were there (and you had held up a sign with your "screen name") I would have waved!

I agree that the event was very well organized and that the Raleigh Convention Center was a first-class venue.

I heard the story about the $1,000,000 jade (heard it was pink jade) while still in line. I also heard there was a rare ($25,000 +/-) guitar there on Saturday.

I understand there was a couple from Texas who had flown into Raleigh at 4:30 a.m. to be at "our" Roadshow. They had art to be appraised. They must have applied for tickets all over the country and happened to get Raleigh tickets.

When the Roadshow info/instructions say you will be standing in line for hours it is the truth. I got in line at 12:30 p.m. for my 1:00 p.m. ticket time and was finished and ready to head home at 5:45 p.m. I found a great little deli/restaurant just up the hill from the Convention Center called Sam and Wally's Eatery for my lunch before the Roadshow -- delicious homemade chicken salad on scrumptious crunchy wheat bread with a cup of homemade soup.

I had a great time looking at what others brought and talking to people near me in line. And the appraisers were very nice -- they weren't turning their noses up at anything anyone had and the ones I heard were very gentle when they had to tell someone their items were of not much monetary value.

First-class all the way, as far as I am concerned.

NO KETCHUP? Who owns this establishment? Must be a Yankee, ketchup is the greatest invention of all time.

Nuts. I've always wanted to go to one of their shows. I had no idea they were in Raleigh. Ah well, best hit the website and see if they're back next year.

I read that this summer's tapings will be on "next year" (starting in January?), but Atlantic City, NJ, was the first place the RS visited this summer so that state's event may be first. I believe they will be posting the Antiques Roadshow "schedule of shows/locations" in September on the Antiques Roadshow website.
