Jury duty notice inescapable even in death ... twice

GREENSBORO — Some people can’t catch a break.

For the second time since his death, Irving Lecin has been summoned for jury duty.

His daughter Robin Lecin received the letter in the mail Friday at her Greensboro home, which used to be her father’s residence.

“And they spelled his name wrong,” said another daughter Sue Polinsky, also of Greensboro.

Irving Lecin died in 1995, and two years later the first summons came.

Robin Lecin sent a letter and a copy of the death certificate to the courthouse.

It seems that the court will excuse Irving Lecin’s inability to serve on a jury, at least. Friday’s letter includes “the candidate is deceased” as a valid exemption, Polinsky said.

The sisters said they’re disappointed that their first attempt to get their father off the jury rolls didn’t work. They plan to go to the courthouse to find out what happened and want to make sure their father’s identity hasn’t been stolen.

And what would Irving Lecin think?

“My father was an old New Yorker,” Polinsky said. “He would’ve shook his head from side to side, he would’ve said something about his tax money and then he would’ve poured himself a bourbon. ... He was a funny guy.”

Irving sounds like a great guy; thanks for including that last line.

You know what we need to do to make sure this doesn't happen again? Hire lots of people, build a bigger office, and put in more oversight. Obviously, this bureaucracy isn't big enough.

Irving really took extreme measures to avoid jury duty.

I'll bet he got a stimulus check, too.

oh good grief

And the first place I would check is with the Guilford County Board of Elections. They kept my deceased father on "the rolls" even after being supplied with a "raised stamp" official Certificate of Death issued by the State of North Carolina.

As the middle daughter, I can certify that my father (z''l)
1. Is not getting a stimulus check; has never gotten anything other than an invitation (or 50) after he passed away
2. He would have enjoyed jury duty but am not sure the lawyers would have wanted him (he was an engineer and was extraordinarily analytical)
3. The only "extreme measures" he took were to live long enough to take care of my mother and his daughters and that was simply heroic (but that's another story)
4. He drank only really good bourbon. One per day. "Everything in moderation" was one of his best lines. (Others include, "Anything worth doing is worth doing well," and "Don't pick it up until you're sure where you're going to put it down" - usually referred to TV set moving).

We'll visit the BOE shortly and hopefully get this straightened out, once and for all.

I'm not suprised. The records are never updated. I'm usually called every 4 to 5 years. I was even called 2 months after I served on the Grand Jury. Now I won't be able to opt out until I'm 72.
