A man who police say beat and robbed an elderly man earlier this month was the person who later reported the crime.
Donald Lee Sapp Jr., 33, 628 Loftus St., was arrested Thursday and charged with common law robbery, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, three counts of identity theft and two counts of obtaining property by false pretense. He is being held in the Rockingham County jail under a $500,000 bond and has a July 8 court date.
Police were called to Red’s Upholstery Shop at about 1:15 p.m. June 16. Officers received a report about a suspicious person running from the shop with a pipe in his hand. They found 80-year-old Harold Thomas Harris bleeding from a head injury. Harris told police someone hit him in the head and stole his wallet while he was working on a car.
Harris was treated at Morehead Memorial Hospital for three lacerations to his head.
Lt. Tommy Frazier said Sapp reported the crime. Frazier said the charges of identity theft and obtaining property by false pretenses stem from Sapp using Harris’ Lowe’s credit card.
