Duke's highest-paid employee: Coach K

DURHAM — Coach K remains Duke's highest-paid employee.

The university's most recent IRS documents were obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press. They show that Duke paid men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski more than $3.6 million during the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2008.

The Hall of Fame coach made about $2.2 million the previous year.

Krzyzewski's salary is about 3½ times that of Duke's next highest-paid employee. Chancellor emeritus Dr. Ralph Snyderman made about $983,000.

Former women's basketball coach Gail Goestenkors, who's now at Texas, also made the school's list of top earners. Duke paid her nearly $500,000 in deferred compensation.

The salaries were first reported by The Herald-Sun of Durham.

He deserves it. Probably smarter than most of the faculty and administration anyway. Has much more common sense (remember the lacrosse debacle?)

Agree.......

Duke and UNC puts NC on the national map in many ways and indirectly provides millions of dollars and jobs to the folks here.

The Duke/UNC basketball programs have put NC on the map to stay. Not only have the programs provided offshoots to many other opportunities, the two programs actually put out quality individuals, whether they play pro basketball or not. They defy the prerequisite that players have to be convicted felons to play in the NBA.

Surely his paycheck is related to past performance, as Duke has not made a Final Four since 2004. With Gerald leaving early, Williams transferring, and not being able to sign John Wall, don't expect them to get to the Final Four next year either, with no true point guard. I celebrated the national title with mixed feelings of apprehension for next year, but with Ed Davis and Deon Thompson coming back along with Ginyard, and this incredible incoming freshman class, the Heels still will have an edge over Duke next year. North Carolina has simply been getting much better talent since Roy arrived. If Coach K wants to start winning national titles, he better start recruiting "one and done players," as like it or not, this is the current situation in basketball.

Isn't Duke a private school?

If so, their business what they pay him.

Exactly. And in K's case, he's probably worth it given the strength of his public image and ability to promote Duke.
