Duke basketball player to leave school

(Updated 9:38 am)

Rising sophomore Elliot Williams will leave Duke University and its basketball team for family medical reasons, school officials said Wednesday.

He is expected to file an appeal for a waiver of the NCAA's year in residence transfer rule that would require him to sit out the 2009-10 season. Williams is seeking to transfer closer to his hometown of Memphis, Tenn., to be near his family.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Elliot and his family,” coach Mike Krzyzewski stated in a news release. “We fully support him in his efforts to be closer to them during this trying time. He is a good young man with an opportunity to become an outstanding player. We wish him well as he determines his future. He will always be a part of our program and we will always be in his corner.”

Williams averaged 4.2 points and 2.3 rebounds in 34 games a year ago. He started 11 of the final 12 games.

WOW, it's been a rough off season for Coach K. Duke loses their best player to the NBA, they don't get John Wall (they desperately needed an athletic point guard), and one of their few athletic players transfers. Must say I feel bad. NOT!!! For those Duke fans who think you will get UNC next year, not happening. I'm sure that Ed Davis, Deon Thompson, Tyler Zeller, John Henson, and the twins can handle the Plumlee's and Ryan Kelly.
