Former N.C. speaker's friends ask for end to his sentence

CHARLOTTE (AP) — Former Republican Gov. Jim Martin is among those asking that former North Carolina House Speaker Jim Black's prison sentence be commuted or that he be moved closer to home, a newspaper is reporting.

The Charlotte Observer reported Monday that 150 people have written federal officials on Black's behalf and that Martin plans to do so. Black, 74, has been incarcerated since July 2007 at the federal prison in Lewisburg, Pa.

Black was sentenced for accepting thousands of dollars in illegal payments while he was speaker.

Black's attorney says his client is in poor health, as is his wife.

Supporters also say that if Black's sentence isn't commuted, he should be moved to a prison in North Carolina or South Carolina.

What Black did was reprehensible and an affront to the citizens of North Carolina. He should serve his time, regardless of age or health. However, I wouldn't have a problem transferring him to a prison in North or South Carolina so that his ailing wife could visit him.

Jimbo, when you dance you have to pay the fiddler! And, apparently, you did a lot of dancinng.

He deserves absolutely no special treatment or considerations. What he did to the people of NC was beyond despicable, make him do his time and let him die with a prison record over him.

He absolutely should NOT have his sentence commuted. If he doesn't like prison, he should have thought of that before he broke the law. We have to stand strong and show our politicians that corruption will not be tolerated.

I don't care about his poor health. I feel for his wife, but that should not be a consideration for early release.

I wouldn't have a problem with him serving his time in North Carolina, though.

I have no problem with moving him closer, totally understand how illness can affect family, but that would be as far as it goes and that would be asking more than enough considering how he deceived/cheated and numerous legal violations against the people of this state.

After 30+ years of law enforcement and of all the different criminals I went after, the lowest of the low were the corrupt public servants. When someone enters public service whether hired, elected or appointed they are sworn to an oath. This oath of office is rendered with the right hand on the Holy Bible. Before the Almighty and ever loving Lord as well as many of the constituents the servent swears to serve the public and its people. Too many of them take this position of public trust to enrich themselves well beyond what they receive normally. They believe themselves to be better and above everything else. The only thing Jim Black is upset over is he found out that his self promoted highness was found out. I question the motives of the other politicians that wants the system to now go easy on him. What are they hiding? The Dog's outa here!

Actually should go further, reverse or investigate all legislation that he got passed in this state. Did you know here in NC if you wear glasses, anyone that after 2 years you can't get the prescription copied. Now most peoples vision doesn't change that drastically within a few years, but this was put in to help his friends in the medical community. I broke my glasses a year ago to the extent that I could not wear them, had to make an appointment for new ones, I was practically blind for 2 weeks, who did this help-wasn't me. My prescription hadn't changed....

All ya had to do was go to Walmart. They'll do an eye exam and fix you up with new glasses in a hour.

"Black's attorney says his client is in poor health"

Oh, please, someone tell me he isn't having back problems. Surely the Lewisburg federal prison (which at one time housed and perhaps still does house white-collar criminals) has at least one chiropractor on staff or on call who can pop a few (vertebrae, that is) to help Mr. Black the optometrist who blackened the eye of the State Legislature for waaaaaay too long.

Wonder if he is having much monetary success up there in Pennsylvania unrolling his homemade "eye chart" and asking fellow prisoners if they can see "the big E" (for "easy money").

How about posting the address these people wrote to and lets see if we can get 150,000 people to write and make sure Black dies in prison.

Great idea Paul, if they let him out they should let everone out!
If we had a AG worth a crap, he would file state charges against him!

I say leave him where he is, do the crime do the time. also save space for his good friend and buddy
Mike Easley and his side kicks. Its time the people wake up and elect a new set of crooks.
This group of people has already put us so far in debt, that we will never see daylight again.
That includes our present governor. I can't understand why the crowd in Raleigh think they
can spend their way out of debt.
