Lacrosse players support Giuliani's lawsuit

DURHAM (AP) — The son of former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani has added the backing of Duke lacrosse athletes in his lawsuit against the school.

Andrew Giuliani has sued Duke, saying the school broke a contract with him when it dismissed him from the golf team. The News & Observer in Raleigh said Saturday that members of Duke's 2006 lacrosse team filed a friend-of-the-court on Giuliani's behalf.

Last month, a federal magistrate recommended Giuliani's lawsuit be dismissed. Giuliani's attorney, Robert Ekstrand, has opposed the magistrate's recommendation in a court document filed this week.

The younger Giuliani claimed that Duke's golf coach manufactured accusations against him to justify kicking him off the team in 2008, when he was a junior. He's seeking an unspecified amount of damages.

NC Universities, including Duke, should get rid of the sports teams and concentrate on academics and research.

That's just completely ignorant and stupid to say that NC schools should get rid of athletics, for the very simple reason that athletics generate significant revenue that is filtered down to the academic community, and without athletics, any improvements to academia at these universities, would not be possible. Further how about the philanthropy? If there wasn't athletics, the Carolina Covenant founded by Roy Williams would not be in existence, and therefore qualified low income kids would not be able to afford higher education. Please explain how this betters society and academia? How about Jimmy V? He was a basketball coach. Under your theory, there would not be basketball or a Jimmy V. and therefore there would be 500 million dollars less donated to fight cancer. Brilliant statement there. LOL.

All the UNC schools require taxpayer multimillion dollar subsidies to pay for the sports teams.
UNC-CH's Dean Dome has received over 35 MILLION in taxpayer subsidies, the UNC sports team
receive at least 10 million in YEARLY taxpayer subsidies. Plus the Carolina Challenge was not
started by Roy Williams. Jimmy V was involved in a number of shady actions. All reasons to get
rid of the UNC sports teams.
College sports, the biggest taxpayer and student rip-off around.

Jimmy V has been dead for years. Where have you been?

One, it's the Carolina Covenant that I used an example, not the Carolina Challenge, as you have referred to it. Second, sports at UNC bring in more revenue than loss, significantly more, so your simply wrong. Do your research before commenting, and judging by the fact others have said you are ignorant, or have been sarcastic with you, this is probably a great suggestion, ignorati.

Let's see the last big research from a NC University was that people are more likely to gain weight when they move in with a significant other! WOW!!! Great study there. My 4 year old neice could have told you that. Way to waste money at a big NC University! No thanks...let's drop that research project and go watch Duke vs. UNC 2 to 3 times a year on the tv and get the real revenue going. They are sell outs everytime...big tv revenue. I think that is what the economy needs, not THAT stupid research project.

Wonder how much money the sports bring in?
I have heard the Carolina championship was worth 75 million!
Wonder how much illegals take out?

College athletics is one thing that puts NC on the map. Americans need more athletics. Who cares about the cash? Let people make money and quit whining about it. A healthy person - even an academic - is an athletic person. Sports and athletics are amazingly good for society. Some of our best times are when we come together as communities supporting our teams. We need more ways to bring us together, and if that means millions are made off of sporting matches, so be it.

As far as the lawsuit, I hope young Guiliani's case results in justice.

From what I've read in the paper, this kid was a jerk and a disruptive influence on the team. I remember how he acted while his dad was being installed as the Mayor of New York. His conduct, before the television audience, was reprehensible.

Of course, when all is said and done, his father is probably responsible for his attitude of entitlement and privilege.

I agree with your points. Just look at Al Gore's kid. Before I have a parent of a spoiled kid attack me, SOME (not all) of these parents tend to take the approach that their kid is above the law, and can do no wrong. There is no accountability for behavior. Look at Rudy. He divorced Donna Hanover basically telling the media first, before her. His ex wife is a TV reporter, and was made aware of it for the first time on live TV!! As far as the lawsuit is concerned, it has no merits. I don't care if you have the President file a friend of the court brief, there is no merit to the suit. Further, Guiliani is white, affluent, and if he was so good, would be playing in the U.S Open this week, so I just don't understand on what basis he is suing. Situations like this are generally gender and discrimination related to be valid and stand up in court, or based on the fact that his dismissal in some way will impede his attempt to garner future earnings. I don't see any of these tests being met her.

Looks like Duke University sports just can't get it right. I guess when your forced to deal with privilaged people, you just need to learn to bend the rules a little to make sure you please them. Apparently this kid was raised by friends that were suppose to be his parents. After the Lacrosse fiasco, looks like they were learn that it's ok for the students to behave anyway they want and then sue when they get acused of not following the rules. You may remember that Duke wanted to handle the drunk lacrosse players rape case by raising the age to drink so it would make it harder to win a lawsuit. I know, I know, these thugs were aquitted of the rape and I'm sure that didn't happen, but to award them millions for thier stupid behavour was inappropriate. Being accused and aquitted was not going to ruin thier future, showing how big a losers they were would have taken care of that.

I dislike Duke more than anyone, but the main culprit in that rape case was the disbarred Durham DA, Mike Nifong. Whether or not the Duke lacrosse players are arrogant, snobby losers (while I may agree with you), unfortunately it is besides the point. They were unjustly accused, and had their reputations thrown under the bus, so they were entitled to be compensated for that, just as you or I would if the same thing happened to us.

Let me make one point quite clear, I do not dislike Duke. It has nothing to do with the University. It's one of the best in the country. If you honestly think nothing happened at that alcohol induced party where these losers had to pay to get a girl to take her cloths off, then you truely need to get out more. When this stripper told the police that she was raped that evening, the police had no choice but to investigate. When the DA was handed the case and with all these "special interst groups" breathing down his throat, he probably had to go after these losers or lose his position at re-election time. I agree that he should not have done it, but I guess he was a power hungry person that just did not want to do the right thing and not prosecute the case. These athlectic thugs did break the law by possesssing and consuming alcohol underage. The "we all did it when we were young" should not apply to this case since they went one step futhur and hired a prostitute to strip, which is also illegal. These loser had been in trouble before but someone at Duke University must have been pressured to allow them to participate in sports there or they do not have guide lines in place at the University to play there. All they need to do is be good at the sport and thier "in". I strongly believe that they should have been aquitted but I still think they should not have been giving any monitary settlement. They put themselves in a position for something bad to happen, broke the law, and were then giving millions for thier bad behavour. Then some idiots at the University tried to get the state to lower the drinking age. That just sends out the wrong message to the students, especially the ones that are there to learn and make somthing of themselves when they graduate.
