Strandberg ties for lead at N.C. Women's Amateur

Kathleen Strandberg of Greensboro is tied for first with three other golfers at 1-under 71 after Wednesday's first round of the 60th North Carolina Women's Amateur Championship.

The N.C. State senior and Page graduate is tied with Meghan Moore of Bahama, Patty Moore of Charlotte andKatherine Perry of Cary.

Due to heavy rains on Tuesday, the first round was cancelled. The championship was shortened to 36 holes and will conclude today.

Jessica Vincent, a Coastal Carolina golfer out of Burlington, is one stroke off the lead after shooting an even-par 72 at the Wilson Country Club in Wilson.

JUNIORS ADVANCE: Morgan Cranford and Lane Gakeler of Greensboro both advanced at the 42nd N.C. Junior Championship at Henderson C.C. Cranford defeated Shelby Osiecki of New Bern 1 up and Gakeler beat Grace Stallings of Raleigh 3 & 2.

BASEBALL

HITOMS 3, STARS 2: The HiToms (8-7) defeated the Stars (3-6) of Catawba Valley at Finch Field. Kyle Barbeck, a left-hander out of Ole Miss, was winner. The southpaw went five innings, struck out eight and allowed two runs. Jordan Jankowski got out of a bases-loaded jam in sixth without giving up a run. The game was called after the seventh due to unplayable field conditions.

Duke men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski is one of six men that will be honored today by the National Father's Day Committee at the 68th annual Father of the Year awards presentation in New York.
