RALEIGH (AP) — The N.C. State Ports Authority and its chairman have been subpoenaed by federal investigators already interested in the activities of former Gov. Mike Easley and his wife.

Authority spokeswoman Karen Fox said Wednesday that the authority and Chairman Carl Stewart of Gastonia have been issued subpoenas by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Fox said the authority had collected documents sought in the subpoena but declined to specify them. She wouldn't confirm a report by The News & Observer of Raleigh that federal authorities wanted information about a state-owned marina in the Easleys' hometown of Southport.

Former N.C. State Chancellor James Oblinger testified Wednesday morning before a grand jury that is seeking details about a job given to former first lady Mary Easley.

Carl Stewart is one fine man....would have been a great Governor. His service to the state as Chairman of the Ports Authority has been noble and in the true spirit of public service. Greensboro's own Bob Wicker is also on that authority and is another exemplary public servant.

OH WAIT! Hold the phone! As I write this, the state is building a new mega-port in Southport...and...Mike Easley is from...SOUTHPORT! Do I smell a new story cooking? I wonder if they're going to look into the time, what was it, several years ago, that a state-owned ferry was taken off its route at the Outer Banks in the summer so it could be used as a party boat for select state officials at the Tall Ships Festival. Remember that big stink? And "His Excellency" said he knew nothing of it at the time. You know, the more you stir stink...the worse it smells.
