2 girls put on wrong Continental Express flights

HOUSTON (AP) — Continental Airlines said Tuesday it has taken steps to ensure that proper procedures are followed after two unaccompanied girls were placed on wrong Continental Express flights over the weekend.

An 8-year-old College Station girl erroneously ended up in Fayetteville, Ark., and a 10-year-old Massachusetts girl was mistakenly sent to Newark, N.J., after boarding planes operated by ExpressJet, which is under contract with Continental.

Houston-based Continental said in a statement the mix-up was a "miscommunication among staff."

"I have never seen so much incompetence in all my life," Wendy Babineaux said in a story for the Houston Chronicle. Her daughter was headed to Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday to see her father. She was sent to Fayetteville, back to Houston and then to Charlotte.

Babineaux's attorney, Wayne T. Rife, told The Associated Press Tuesday night that his client became worried when the girl's father called to find out where their child was. He said his client is concerned about how Continental Airlines handled the situation.

"It was just a complete breakdown in the procedures that were supposed to be implemented," Rife said. "And, in Mrs. Babineaux's perspective, Continental, to this point, has not taken it seriously."

On Sunday, Jonathan Kamens said he put his daughter, Miriam, on a Cleveland-bound flight at Logan Airport in Boston to visit her grandparents. He told WBZ-TV that shortly after the plane landed in Ohio, his father-in-law called saying she had not arrived.

Kamens said for 45 minutes no one could tell him where his daughter was. She was finally located unharmed in Newark.

Kamens said the number of people who failed to do their jobs is "mindboggling."

Continental spokeswoman Kelly Cripe said in an e-mailed statement that in both instances flights with different destinations were being loaded at the same time from the same doorway and there was miscommunication among staff members.

"In both circumstances the children were supervised throughout the entire process and were rebooked and routed to the proper destinations on the same day," Cripe said in the statement.

Kamens said on his blog that the airline offered him a $75 refund.

My god it's not like they were molested. The airline messed up but made it right. Its not like they cut off the wrong leg like hospitals do. They are human they make mistakes. They are also forced to hire undesirables.

paul, get real man "it's not like they were molested." What if they were your kids?...major PO'ed....this will cause problems in the very near future...I'll bet you good money that those girls were scared half to death & crying....The girls will be scarred for life about flying solo! You said "The airline messed up but made it right." How so?...After flying ALL DAY, being scared half to death & not really understanding the whole thing...then you said "Its not like they cut off the wrong leg like hospitals do. They are human they make mistakes." You are comparing eggs with grape fruit..."They are also forced to hire undesirables." 911 changed a lot of things but as you see there is still a BIG problem with the whole system if the employee's can't do their jobs...There's too many GOOD people looking a job to have this kind of incompetent employees.......

I'm with you, ‘po ole organic farmer’! That is an inexcusable error on the part of Continental. Dismissing as callously as was done by Paul J is equally ludicrous! Come on, Paul J... Did you never have children? Were you never a child? What has hardened you to make you unable to see how devastating that would have been for the parents and the children?

"the number of people who failed to do their jobs" starts with four parents. They signed waivers for unaccompanied minors. They put them on the plane. Which plane did they put them on? Did they put their child on a multi-leg flight? Think, think, think. This is your child.

They have a lawyer for this????? That's one of many things wrong with America today--"Let's make some money off of this mistake!" When my children flew unaccompanied, we were always allowed to take them to their seat--Has that changed?

Hmmm...

June 17, 2009 - 9:39 am EDT

Resigned,

I, too, flew unaccompanied as a child and my parents were allowed to walk me to the gate and one would get on the plane and take me to my seat. I think the security now is so tight, that parents aren't allowed to do this anymore - and they should as long as they are going to offer unaccompanied children to to travel...even for a fee. The lawyer thing has gotten out of control - it's all about money these days.

boy I'd like to know if they went out & hired a lawyer within 48 hours or did she have her OWN lawyer on retainer...maybe it's her big "D" lawyer....why can't they ALL sit down like adults/parents and work out New ways to make sure this can never happen again...leave the checkbook in your desk unless the girls NEED/WANT therapy!...the lawyers aren't invited...

I'll say the baggage made it to the right place long before the girls did, sad but true....

How far would $75 get you on a flight anyway, I've been screwed by airlines before and they have given me $50 toward my next flight if I purchased a ticket within that same year, thanks for nothing!

oh good grief

Whatever happened to securely pinning a large note on the outside of the child's clothing with the destination city and flight numbers written in large letters/numerals?
