GREENSBORO — No children came in contact with a rabid bat at Murphey Traditional Academy on Monday, Guilford County Schools officials say.
A spokeswoman with the school system said a parent trapped the bat on Thursday and took it to the county’s animal control office, where it tested positive Monday for rabies. Parents were notified about the incident by the school system’s telephone messaging service.
This is the sixth case of rabies in Guilford County this year.
The Guilford County Department of Health said no other humans or animals were exposed to the rabid bat. The school is at 2306 Ontario St. in Greensboro.
The health department said pets can be vaccinated against rabies at two upcoming events:
* June 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., as part of the Greensboro Parks and Recreation 75th Anniversary Celebration at Country Park. Rabies shots will be $5 each, and the clinic will be set up at the entrance to Jaycee Park.
* July 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Summerfield Fire Department, 7400 Summerfield Road. Rabies shots will be $5 each.
