HAW RIVER (MCT) — A house was destroyed by fire Wednesday morning after a pickup truck crashed into the living room and exploded.
Leo Currie of Burlington was transporting a 1987 Ford Ranger pickup on the back of a trailer to an automotive shop on Dickey Road at about 11 a.m., said Mike Bowman, a Haw River firefighter and an investigator with the Alamance County fire marshal's office.
As Currie unloaded the truck, it got away from him, rolled down a hill and crashed into the living room of 1991 Dickey Road. Fire investigators believe the truck sheared the line from the gas tank to the house. Someone inside the home was cooking. That caused a spark which ignited the gas and the truck.
Two people inside the wood-frame home escaped without injury. But the home was engulfed by flames, and firefighters from Mebane and Haw River needed about 30 minutes to control the blaze.
Bowman estimated that there was about $10,000 in damages to the house and $3,000 to the truck.
The Highway Patrol is consulting with the Alamance County District Attorney's office about possible charges.
