Six school children in Alamance and Guilford counties were confirmed to have the H1N1 virus Thursday.
A first-grader at Gibsonville Elementary School tested positive for the virus, also known as swine flu, Guilford County Schools said. Last week, a UNCG student was Guilford County’s first confirmed case.
In Alamance County, five students tested positive. Three are students at Blessed Sacrament School and the other two attend R. Homer Andrews Elementary. Both schools are in Burlington.
The positive cases reported at Blessed Sacrament School are the children of a parent confirmed Wednesday as Alamance county’s first H1N1 case, health officials said.
In all cases, parents at the schools have been notified, and health officials report that sanitation procedures are ongoing. All the students are reported to be on antiviral treatments.
On Thursday, North Carolina reported 24 new cases of H1N1, bringing the total in the state to 83 confirmed cases.
