CHAPEL HILL — Health officials at UNC-Chapel Hill confirmed Wednesday that a student who lives off campus in Orange County has been diagnosed with a probable case of H1N1 influenza, or swine flu.

The student is recovering and in isolation at home, officials said. The university expects to receive confirmation of the diagnosis later this week.

Officials with Campus Health Services already have communicated with people who have been in close contact with the affected student, asking them to monitor themselves for flu symptoms and to avoid contact with others except to seek medical attention.

On May 29, the university announced that that a School of Medicine employee who doesn’t work in patient care had tested positive for the H1N1 virus. The employee also was placed in isolation.
