Summerfield suspends property tax for one year

Summerfield taxpayers will get a break next fiscal year.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the town council voted 3-2 to suspend its property tax.

A half-cent decrease in the tax rate -- from 3.5 cents to 3 cents per $100 of assessed value -- had been proposed for the 2009-10 fiscal year, but Councilwoman Alicia Flowers insisted the council reconsider the property tax holiday she suggested at the May council meeting.

“There’s no reason we can’t do everything in this budget and not collect a property tax," she said. "We can afford that.”

The proposed half-cent decrease would have saved the owners of a $300,000 home about $20, Flowers said. “That same owner could save $60 with a tax holiday.”

In the May meeting, the council voted 3-2 against the holiday. Flowers and Councilwoman Becky Strickland voted in favor of the holiday.

In Tuesday’s meeting, Councilwoman Dena Barnes voted in favor of the holiday.

“It’s due to the economic times,” Barnes said. “But this is for one year only.”

Here's the plan. Get Summerfield to annex Greensboro, High Point, Stokesdale and all of Rockingham County. Or at least consult with their elected officials to explain how this was accomplished. An educated guess at next year's headline...Home Sales in Summerfield Spike!
