GREENSBORO — City Council, you beat everything, you know that?
A consultant, Colin Baenziger, goes off and pays us a compliment, and now you’ve taken it the wrong way.
See, we’re advertising for a city manager. And Mr. Baenziger, see, he’s trying to help us find one.
“But what is the real reason to live in Greensboro?” his advertisement reads on one of those newfangled gadgets.
“That is easy — it is all the people who live here. Although the third largest city in the state, its residents affectionately characterize it as having a Mayberry mindset.”
Outstandin’.
’Til some of you council members came along and forgot all about your upbringin’.
“I guess it makes some people think that we’re backwards or country bumpkins,” Councilwoman Trudy Wade said.
Then, there’s the mayor.
“I looked at Mayberry most of my life and I liked it,” Yvonne Johnson said, “but I don’t know if that’s the way we would like to describe ourselves.”
We like Mayberry, too, mayor. We sure hope the Mayberry Gazette doesn’t find out about this.
