GREENSBORO -- A plan to renovate a dilapidated school building to house a preschool program failed to gain support during Tuesday night's school board meeting, placing the building in an uncertain future.
The board voted 5-6 against a proposal to sale Braxton Craven Elementary School for $860,000. Guilford Child Development had requested the school board donate the school to it, to be used as a preschool. Days later they offered to buy the school for $860,000, an appraisal amount for the property after demolition of the building.
Guilford Child Development had leased the property, in the Lindley Park neighborhood, for 17 years from the school system until 2004.
Sandra Alexander advocated heavily for the project and after the vote said the board's decision was unfortunate.
“This board chose to hold on to a piece of property they have no way of improving,” Alexander said.
The school has been considered for several projects but never received funding necessary to repair it and bring it up to code.
John Graham, deputy director of Guilford Child Development, said the group has no plans to purchase any other property.
“The community lost out tonight,” Graham said.
