RALEIGH (AP) — Former North Carolina first lady Mary Easley is saying goodbye to the state's largest public university.
Mary Easley's $170,000-a-year contract with N.C. State was canceled Monday. She issued a statement Wednesday through her lawyer urging everyone affiliated with the Raleigh campus "to now focus on the best welfare of the students."
Easley's statement doesn't mention her firing or whether she would try to enforce or negotiate a payout of her terminated contract. She was employed to run a school speaker series and lead a public safety center.
N.C. State's chancellor, top academic officer and board chairman resigned recently as evidence mounted that former Gov. Mike Easley was involved in her hiring.
