House debate begins on tobacco and other taxes

House members have begun committee debate over tax and budget bills that would raise more than $940 million in new taxes.

However, agreement over the tax proposals is hard to come by. Although Democrats control the House, some rank-and-file members are pushing back against proposals by their leaders.

In the House Finance Committee, Rep. Van Braxton, a Kinston Democrat, pushed an amendment that stripped new cigarette and other tobacco taxes from the bill. That amendment passed 22-7, but the tax package is not yet final.

Debate on the tax measure and a related budget bill is expected to continue throughout today.

Meanwhile, some other Democrats say the tax increases don’t go far enough.

“We need to get as close to $2 billion as possible,” said Rep. Earl Jones, a Greensboro Democrat who said he opposed the tax package because it was too small.

Jones called the current tax proposal a symbolic step that fell short of meeting the state’s needs. The state should follow the federal government 's example in terms of spending more to spark economic recovery, he said.

Oh, heaven forbide that we place a tax on cigarettes... More deadly than a terrorist's 747, tobacco is a sacred cow in this state. By all means, let's be sure to not to introduce any taxes that might inhibit the sale of this deadly agent and the development of RJ Reynolds and Philip-Morris induced cancers...

No one ever addresses the cost of a tobacco tax increase.
How many NC people lose their jobs with ever increase.
It will also increase sales in boarder states!
New Jersey put in a tobacco tax and lost money.
The tax we need is a newspaper tax.
They tax our food and let papers go.
If heard of cutting pork, you have damn well never heard of this in NC

I think the State government needs to be as competitive as private industry, too much fat, too much greed and all taking care of themselves. I go back to State Employees having to take 10 hrs. off a year in pay, what a joke!!! I've been on a 4 day week since Feb. and I'm managing just fine, hate it but just fine. Myself and co-workers watched DOT workers remove a tree from 29N last week after storms, 2 people actually cutting and working, 3 supervising with hands in pockets or on cell phones. The State can't keep making promises it can't afford to keep without putting a more difficult tax burden on everyone else.
