GREENSBORO — One by one, 19 recruits donned shiny new badges and became Greensboro firefighters Friday morning.
“This is a great accomplishment for you,” fire Chief Gregory H. Grayson , who joined the department this month, told the new firefighters. “I challenge you to challenge yourself to be the best you can be.”
Some recruits — all of whom are men — start work as early as today .
Their trainers said the class made high marks, both academically and in the intense physical training required through 18 weeks of recruit school.
The recruits came out the other side with tight bonds, as evidenced by the inside jokes shared at the graduation at GTCC.
“This is so much more than just a job. It’s part of who we are. It gives our life great purpose,” graduate Matthew Clapp said. “And according to Capt. (Chuck) Hall, it’s cool and chicks dig it.”
