Elon aldermen to vote on budget Tuesday

ELON – The Elon Board of Aldermen plans to vote on a $7.4 million budget Tuesday.

The budget would not change the property tax rate but includes a new storm water program fee of $2 per household per month.

The fee will cover the costs of a state-mandated program to educate residents about storm water and reduce pollutants that end up in streams and lakes.

The proposed budget is a $300,000 increase from the approved 2008-2009 budget.

Town Manager Mike Dula has proposed moving money from the water and sewer fund to the general fund to help make up for the drop in sales tax revenue and interest income.

The budget includes a 2 percent cost-of-living adjustment for town workers but freezes merit bonuses and promotions. No new employees will be hired.

At the 6 p.m. Tuesday meeting, the Library Building Committee plans to recommend an architectural firm for a town library.
