Stopped school bus bill passes Senate

The Senate has passed a measure named for a Rockingham County teenager that would allow school systems to install cameras on their school bus stop arms.

Known as H 440, The Nicholas Adkins School Bus Safety Act, the measure is named for a 16-year-old student who was killed as he crossed the street to board a school bus.

“He got barely two feet into the street before he got struck and killed,” said Sen. Phil Berger, a Rockingham County Republican.

The measure increases the penalty for killing someone by passing a stopped school bus. It also provides that video evidence collected by a school bus stop arm camera is admissible in court.

The bill must be given a final legislative approval by the House before being sent to Gov. Bev Perdue.

Can't say I disagree with this one. I've watched too many idiots blow by buses with their red lights going.

When a school bus is stop and got the sign out if you pass it your should not be penrment to drive for 6 mouth and pay a $500.00 fine. If you hit a child you should not be should be not to dive for 5 Years and pay 1,000,if you should kill one you should not drive at alland pay there parent a lot of money.

I've never seen anyone blow past a stopped school bus, except for on 4 lane streets with a center turn lane, making it effectively a 5 lane street. In that situation, about 90% of the folks stop, although it isn't required.

And in these situations, I'm one of the guys that blows by, unless there are inconsiderate drivers who've stopped in front of me and are blocking my way.
