GREENSBORO — Guilford County Schools officials are waiting to receive more documents from Stan Kowalewski before deciding how to proceed with the former Northern Guilford basketball coach using booster club money to pay for personal services.
School system attorney Jill Wilson said Wednesday she’s waiting to hear from David Brown, Kowalewski’s attorney, who is gathering documents and information related to a bank account Kowalewski opened last year for Northern Guilford’s basketball team. Brown did not return phone calls Wednesday.
School officials have accused Kowalewski of using money from that account — more than $4,000 — to pay for personal services such as yard maintenance, electric and gas bills and, in one instance, Wendover OB/GYN. In one case, Kowalewski withdrew $1,500.
Asked earlier this week if school officials planned to turn over their findings to the district attorney’s office, Wilson said, “We’re waiting for more information from (Kowalewski).”

Kowalewski acknowledged he mishandled managing the account. He said any expenses for personal services were his way of paying himself money he believed was owed him.
Kowalewski used the tax identification number for the nonprofit account of Northern Guilford’s main athletics booster company to open a similar account for basketball, saying former Athletics Director Derrell Force instructed him to.
Force has declined interviews since his resignation.
Norman Klick, an attorney representing Northern Guilford’s main athletics booster organization, said Wednesday officers from the group were unaware Kowalewski had used their tax number. Klick said booster officers were unaware Force approved such an arrangement.
“I think the booster club is kind of on the sidelines watching the school system and Kowalewski work this out,” said Klick. “I think they’re like a lot of us and are ready to see this go away.”
