High Point University will build a sidewalk along the eastern portion of West College Drive after the High Point City Council approved an encroachment request Monday night.
The university plans to construct a 6-foot-wide sidewalk and a wrought iron fence with brick columns along the roadside to the intersection with East Farriss Avenue. A sidewalk does not exist there now.
The improvements would include a new curb and gutter for the road
Planning staffer Mark Schroeder said a right-of-way encroachment was needed because the fence would be inside the city’s right-of-way along West College Drive.
Improvements will make the road narrower – from 36 feet to 26 feet from curb to curb.
The university will pay for all improvements.
