WINSTON-SALEM – An undercover detective shot at a man who attempted to rob him Friday, police said.

Winston-Salem police said undercover detectives from the Special Investigations Division were working an operation at 6 Timlic Ave. about 1 p.m. Friday, when Benjamin Lee Peoples approached a detective with a 9 mm handgun and demanded money.

The detective drew his service weapon and shot one round toward Peoples that missed, but caused him to drop his handgun.

Peoples, 25, of 6886 Wyandote Ave. was arrested at the scene without injury.

Investigators said Wallace Clayton, 26, of 6 Timlic Ave. Apt. D, was working as an accomplice of Peoples in the robbery attempt and was arrested as well.

Both men were charged with attempted armed robbery, felony conspiracy and were booked into the Forsyth County Detention Center on separate $250,000 bonds.

Police are not releasing the name of the detective involved in the incident because of his undercover assignment.

The detective has been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is being investigated.

Strange, Even a concealed weopons permit wont allow the average person to shoot at someone without being prosecuted.

Pro...did you NOT read that it was an undercover officer whom the PERPS attempted to rob at gunpoint?
A citizen with a CCW or OC can intervene when a crime takes place. The victim was a LEO and NOT average "Joe."
