The Carolina Kennel Club delivered some helpful equipment recently to aid in pets’ recovery from the effects of smoke and fire. The CKC donated 29 pet recovery oxygen mask kits to Guilford County and city of Greensboro fire departments on May 22.
“Some of the fire departments in the area already had some and some didn’t. So this was a chance to deliver the masks to ones who did not have them,” said Pat Barton, corresponding secretary for the CKC.
More than 40,000 pets each year die of smoke asphyxiation, according to Wag’n Enterprises, which distributes the masks. The masks can be used on dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs and even birds.
Each kit consisted of three masks each, in small, medium and large sizes, Barton said.
Several of the kits were delivered by the CKC to the McLeansville fire station, where Mike Wright, the assistant deputy chief, met them and distributed them to the individual stations.
The Carolina Kennel Club was founded in 1938 and is the oldest kennel club in North Carolina. The club is dedicated to the community and supports local canine rescue, spay/neuter programs and rabies clinics.
Last year, the club donated Canine First Aid Kits to the police department for the K-9 Units. They are designed to help the paramedics support an injured K-9 until they can get to a veterinary hospital.
Carolina Kennel Club also sponsored a rabies clinic with the Guilford County Health Department last October.
Upcoming events for the Carolina Kennel Club include a five-day AKC dog show Aug. 5-9 at the Greensboro Coliseum.
