RALEIGH — Rep. Cary Allred, a Burlington Republican, says he plans to resign from his legislative seat after facing scrutiny for his behavior during a night session last month.
Allred faces charges that he was driving over 102 mph on his way to the General Assembly and then, once on the floor, acted inappropriately during debate and toward a teenage page.
“I’m sick of the legislature, I’m sick of the Democrats being in charge, I’m sick of living in a glass house, I’m sick of having to answer to false accusations,” Allred said. “I need a vacation.”
Early Thursday he suggested that he might step down in September. When asked Thursday afternoon, Allred said his resignation could come sooner.
“I might even do it as early as Monday,” Allred said. He said a lull in the action at the General Assembly made now a good time to find a replacement.
When asked whether he would pursue public office again, Allred was uncertain.
“I’m 62 years old, I’m still young in my mind,” Allred said. “All that is in the future. I haven’t made those calculations.”
