RALEIGH (AP) — Federal investigators have sent subpoenas to the Office of the State Auditor to seek records on former first lady Mary Easley.

Subpoenas released Tuesday show that the federal investigators want documents connected to any audits or investigations into the hiring of Easley at North Carolina State. It also seeks details of an investigative report into the university's office of provost.

Federal subpoenas have previously sought former Gov. Mike Easley's travel records from the Highway Patrol and the details of Mary Easley's employment history at N.C. State.

Both the university's provost and the chairman of the board of trustees have resigned amid the scrutiny of Easley's hiring.

If Gov. Mike Easley were a republican, this whole scandal would be national news. Every mention of him in any article on the subject would have the R prominently next to the name. Can't really say it is a double standard because there is only one at least as far as most of the media. D's never run on ethics or morals. So they can't be call unethical or immoral when they get caught. It is as if they are expected to be corrupt. Yet the media pretends to be "shocked" and "betrayed" when a republican gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
Anyone remember all the hooha over Elizabeth Dole being paid $300K a year by the Red Cross when hubby was a senator? But not a peep about Joe Kennedy making over $600K from a tiny little "charity" known as Citizen's Energy? He must be up to $1M by now.
I have no stomach for public corruption, whether it is a health inspector accepting a free cup of coffee from a donut shop or a governor accepting plane rides for himself and make work jobs for his family.
The Easley is going federal. But the coverage will not go national beyond a few web based news site and maybe a nod on Fox.
