Harold Martin named N.C. A&T chancellor

GREENSBORO — N.C. A&T welcomed back alumnus and former faculty member Harold Martin on Friday morning,  this time as its new chancellor.

“It is a great pleasure to come home,” Martin told the crowd assembled at the UNC Board of Governors meeting held on A&T’s campus.

The board unanimously approved Martin, whom system President Erskine Bowles called a mentor, colleague and friend.
He said he could not imagine a better man to lead A&T.

“Harold Martin is a proud Aggie,” Bowles said. “He personifies Aggie pride. He is not only a graduate of A&T; he has also been a faculty member, dean and provost at A&T. He knows this institution inside and out. He is of North Carolina A&T.”

Franklin McCain, who led the chancellor search committee, said this was one of the fastest searches in UNC history, leading Bowles to joke that “we didn’t have to look far.”

Martin, chancellor of Winston-Salem State University from 2000 to 2006, was widely considered the best candidate for the job by Aggies alumni. They have been frustrated by the short tenure and abrupt resignations of the school’s last two chancellors.

Martin was passed over for the job in 1999 and did not apply when it opened again two years ago. Bowles said he asked Martin to join him at UNC general administration instead, where he was chief academic officer.

Many Aggies cried openly when Martin was officially announced as their new leader.

“It’s great to see him come back home,” former student body president Marcus Bass said. “Every year at graduation they challenge us to come back to A&T and give back to the school. There’s no better way he could do that than this.”

Many Aggies said they trusted Martin with the school’s future, citing his work at Winston-Salem State. While chancellor there, Martin saw the school’s average incoming SAT score increase nearly 70 points. The school’s enrollment doubled, and he helped create some of its most successful programs.

“His being an Aggie isn’t the most important thing,” said Kitty Harrigan, a 1978 graduate who high-fived friends as the crowd gave Martin a standing ovation. “This is a man who is qualified to lead this university into the 21st century.”

Martin said he plans to continue the academic progress of outgoing Chancellor Stanley Battle, who resigned in February citing family and personal reasons.

“I want to say publicly that I thank Chancellor Battle and his staff for the progress that was made under his leadership,” Martin said.

Battle has not spoken about his resignation since it was announced in February. But some close to the chancellor and the faculty senate said Battle’s push to make sweeping changes and raise standards caused tension.

There is much work to do at the school, which has struggled financially and academically, Martin said. He expects cooperation from the staff, he said, and thinks they will trust him to make the necessary changes.

“Being a product of the institution and knowing so many people associated with the institution, I don’t believe there will be as much anxiety about trust,” Martin said. “That, I think, is a critical part of what’s needed to communicate effectively, to engage with people.”

Martin said he has high expectations for the school but knows that realizing them won’t be easy.

“No, I don’t walk on water,” Martin said jokingly to the crowd. “And yes, I will need the help of each of you.”

Continue to read the N&R for further updates on the circus known as NC A&T -

Chancellor Martin as you work to correct issues at A&T. Ask your staff, SPA and EPA which issues are most important. If our morale is bad-then the rest cannot be fixed. Audit issues include HR issues and the internal auditor should report to the state and not your office. In he past, Battle was obviously able to keep the internal auditors quiet...

Well, I'm not sure if you (Lakeshia) are a "contributor" or an "inhibiter" to what you call a circus, but North Carolina A&T State University is a fantastic university on an important mission of educating minds and creating leaders. Dr. Martin is an established leader and a proven chancellor. He'll do a great job. We just need to do our jobs and support him.

If you say that "We just need to do our jobs and support him" then why didn't you (and the rest of Aggie Nation) do yours (and their) job and support Chancellor Battle? He also came to A&T with the credentials to get the job done and he was not allowed to do so. When you have a low retention rate and a large number of students on probation that is not acceptable. Dr. Battle made it his goal to correct that and it was obviouls that some "AGGIES" want things a bit easier. Chancellor Martin is a proven leader and a good man and will do a great job but like he said in his acceptance speech he does not work on water. The Aggies had a chance to have him as their Chancellor a number of years ago but decided on Rennick - now I will bet those same Aggies are out singing Martin's name. Support your new Chancellor and get rid of those old ways of thinking or like usual A&T will be left behind.

"TOTHEPOINT" - Sadly, you are either not well-read or very uninformed. For your information, most Aggies supported Dr. Rennick and Dr. Battle. And most will surely support Dr.Martin.

Please do not generalize my comments. I am not talking about most Aggies, I am talking about a very small number of loudmouth Aggies that gave the impression of support when the lights were on but really did not. You earlier comments suggest that you are one of those Aggies.

Claysmith, I think I owe you an apology. I was really and truly directing my comments at another and in another related article and mistakenly took my agression out on you. I do apologize.

No offense taken, my friend. All opinions should be respected. Have a great weekend.

Claysmith did you get a chance to read the comments made by Dowsj24. I am not an Aggie but it sounds to me that Dowsj24 is and is very concern and proud one and equally concerned about the past politics at A&T. It is obvious that Chancellor Battle was qualified when they hired him and now all of a sudden he is not because he did not kiss up to the faculty. Some are saying he was in over his head but they hired him and now because he decided to move on it is being said that he was in over his head. These are the very same folk who were kissing up and smiling in his face when they hired him and who were bad mouthing Rennick at the same time. Got news for you they kissed up to Rennick as well. Chancellor Martin is a good and qualified man and a good person. I only hope those AGGIES do not blow this one as well because after this there will be no more excuses about low graduation rates and overall class performance that Dr. Battle was attempting to address. His only issue was that he did not kiss enough butt and keep the nosey folk abreast of what he was doing and he was an outsider. Battle will land on his feet because he came to A&T qualified and he leaves A&T qualified as for him being an outsider he will do OK. Because outsiders take care of outsiders especially when they are qualified! You can preach Aggie Pride all you want but if your institution has a large number of its students on the probation list and all you need is a 2.0 to become a student - it is obvious this talk of pride is all show. I am happy to hear that Chancellor Martin will carry on where Chancellor Battle, Chancellor Renick and Fort left off which is to not allow A&T be a 13th grade of an extended High School. One good thing is that Chancellor Martin is not going to be blind sided like the past two Chancellors. He at least will know exactly who is passing the bull and who is not.

Ok, I'm sensing a lot of hostility from you... Are you by any chance the wife of FORMER Chancellor Battle? Or perhaps a disgruntled alum of some other school that deep down inside wanted to go to A & T but just didn't have what it took??? Here's a hint, when you get upset your argument falls to pieces because then it seems like you're speaking directly off emotion. Therefore, my suggestion to you is come to terms with the fact that some of us are BORN AGGIES, BRED AGGIES, and will DIE AGGIES and others are just not so fortunate. Be blessed and AGGIE PRIDE!!!

Excuse me sir, but you are the misinformed person in this case. There are some Aggies who have taken it upon themselves to scheme and politic against Battle and therefore pulled the rug from up under him. You obviously are not aware of the ridiculous politics that plague our institution. A&T is a great school but we are stuck in the past. It's time to establish a new legacy and heritage and quit using the previous one as a crutch....or a bragging right as some might see it.

Now that Erskine Bowles has successfully brought the right man to NCAT, when will he search for the right person to take over at WSSU. He should be ashamed that he has let that school go down to the ground under Dr. Reaves' administration.

As a WSSU grad I can say for sure that Dr. Martin is The Man. He is a great leader that connects with people very well. He was very visible on campus and had the best attitude. He was accessible, down to earth, and very involved with the students. He was always visible on campus. He would walk the campus and as students we were always able to approach him and speak to him or ask almost any question. He was never too busy for the students. He made them feel like they were the most important part of the unviversity. I remember he even played a one on one b-ball game against the AD at the Gaines Center for the students, faculty, and staff to attend. The students hated to see him go. WSSU grew leaps and bounds under his leadership. WSSU never really maintained its momentum after his departure. He has been a tough act to follow for WSSU's current chancellor Dr. Reaves. I almost feel sorry for him for having to follow someone as likeable as Dr. Martin. A&T is super lucky to have him back at their institution. I look forward to seeing what he is able to do with A&T. I suspect that he will do great things there and that he will be overwhelmingly successful in placing A&T where it belongs.

Me Too

I know what I am about to say is difficult for many individuals at A & T to believe but it is true and I will say it. Here it is folks: 1) Dr.Battle was over his head. He should have never been selected as Chancellor. Coppin State is a good school, but Coppin State is not A & T . Coppin is not a research activity institution, while A & T is. In fact North Carolina A & T is #3 in the UNC system in the area of research--It is behind UNC-CH and NC State. Coppin is not even on the radar screen as far as research is concerned. . 2) Coppin has 2,500 students, many of whom are poor and lag behind in their scores on standardized measures. A & T, which has 3 times as many students, also has students who manifest these characteristics. However, for the most part, its students are on target. 3) A & T has a tradition that Dr. Battle could not accept. That is, people at A & T are cordial and humble and they expect that from its leadership. In addition, homecoming is "the greatest show on earth" and "party" is the name of the game. Dr. Battle could not accept this tradition and tried to change it. Dr. Battle's arrogance and his "corny" and inappropriate sense of humor were neither appreciated nor were they accepted by the majority of the individuals at A & T . In fact, they were offense to many--including me. .The bottomline is that Dr. Battle just could not adjust to the culture, the history and the tempo of North Carolina A & T. Yes, he was a favorite of students, but this was because Dr. Battle, due to his prior experience, behaved like a Dean of Students rather than a Chancellor and 4) Dr. Battle chose three senior people in his cabinet to be his "close" advisors. Unfortunately, these individuals were out to enhance their units, amass power and control. In addition, they fed him lies about other indivdiuals who were part of his cabinet. This cronies, with whom he consulted, provided him with poor and erroneous advice about an array of individuals and situations and he made critical and inappropriate decisions, Had he sought out the truth, he probably would not have "resigned".

So to all of you who believe that Dr. Battle's "resignation" was unjust, I just ask that you speak to those who knew him, worked with him and/or experienced his "poor" decisions. The bottomline is that Dr. Battle was out of his league and did not have the skills nor the temperment to lead a good institution like A &T. My only regret is that he was not removed when his weaknesses became evident to so many people. Instead, many individuals tried to prop him up and waited for him to fall flat on his face.

I wish Harold Martin the best. I asked all of the staff, faculty and students to work with him and I am sorry that I left A & T months ago could not join you to say "the nightmare is over"

WSSU has had similiar problems with Donald Reaves for the last two years that A&T has had wirh Dr. Battle.
Tell WSSU what A&T did to remove Battle and maybe we can use it at WSSU.
