MANNS HARBOR (AP) — Officials are urging holiday travelers who plan to use the North Carolina ferry system to plan ahead before arriving at the docks.
Ferry traffic over Memorial Day weekend is expected to increase, but budget cutbacks have resulted in fewer runs.
The ferry system also has instituted a new reservation system for toll ferries from Ocracoke, Swan Quarter and Cedar Island. Travelers with reservations must arrive at the terminal at least 30 minutes before a scheduled departure.
Free ferry routes also will be crowded and officials said early arrival will help travelers get a space. Those ferries include Currituck-Knotts Island, Hatteras-Ocracoke, Cherry Branch-Minnesott Beach, Bayview-Aurora and Southport-Fort Fisher.
