Goodwill opening coffee shop

The Goodwill Retail Store, 5301 Samet Drive in High Point, is serving up more than deals on clothing and household goods.

On Friday, the Goodwill store opened Edgar’s Coffee.

The shop serves café-style coffee, smoothies and other beverages. Prices range from $1 for a 12-ounce cup of joe to $3.75 for a 20-ounce smoothie.

“We wanted to give our customers another benefit of shopping at Goodwill and another way to save during these tough economic times,” said Tammy Friedeck, marketing specialist for Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina.

The store also “hopes to attract a new customer base that wouldn’t typically come into Goodwill,” she said.

Goodwill staff will operate the shop, the first coffee shop for Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina.

The coffee shop will have shorter hours than the retail store. Coffee will be served from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Retail store hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The coffee shop is named for Edgar J. Helms, who founded Goodwill in Boston 100 years ago.

Hi, I am the operations manager of THE ORIGINAL EDGAR'S COFFEE HOUSE in Springfield, Ill. We opened June of 2008 and cannot understand how another Goodwill can use "our" name.
